Property Investors Fear New Stamp Duty Rates
The announcement during the Budget last month about the new 15% stamp duty levy for property investments worth over £2m (and those bought through companies) has left many legitimate property investors concerned about their portfolios.
Whilst they understand that this levy has been introduced to stop those who are buying properties through corporate vehicles to avoid tax; property investors and experts alike all agree that this move could be damaging to the property market.
Not only has it already made many big property companies stop their acquisitions (until they find out if there are any concessions for residential property companies). Experts are also concerned that this tax will stop foreign property investors from buying properties in the UK for their employees.
And it is a legitimate concern…
Most of London’s property transactions involve overseas property investors, who to date have helped to keep the UK property market flourishing.
Without them there may be a dramatic rise in the number of vacant property investments.
As such many property businesses are currently writing to the Treasury asking them to rethink this tax. Why they listen? We will have to wait and see…
